<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
Your worksheet is a draft
document. It is a tool for you to use to verify that you have all the documents
you need to prove your lineage. It is not the final application so it does not
have to be perfect. Use the worksheet as a framework. My job as Historian is to
turn what you have submitted into a finished application.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
When you receive your worksheet,
we will have filled in all the citations for events for which the Society
already has documentation. You do not need to send copies of any of these
documents. We do not need more copies of stuff we already have! If there are
weaknesses in the existing documentation, they will be noted, highlighted in
yellow. If you are unsure how to abbreviate on your worksheet, please review
our document on abbreviations.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
Your task is to try to fill in
the blanks. You can see that there is a line for each birth, marriage and death
event for both the line carrier and the spouse with spaces for place, date and references.
In a perfect world, you will be able to fill in the place and date fields for
each event and have a source document for each one. In the real world, you will
probably still have blanks, particularly in those hard to prove middle
generations. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
As you start working on the
document, start with yourself. Make sure you have a copy of your own birth
certificate that lists your mother’s maiden name. Fill in your birth place,
date and write B/C in the References field. If you are married, do the same for
your wedding date and place and the birth (and death if applicable) of your
spouse. Put the name of your spouse’s parents in the designated spot. Hint: I
will use the spelling of names that you put here – they are often hard to read
on hand-written documents and I don’t want to butcher names that you know.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
Next, move on to your parents.
You need to record all the applicable birth, marriage and death events with
dates and places and provide reference documents that include parents’ names if
at all possible. Note the documents you are using as references in the fields
provided. Note: if either of your parents was born before civil birth
registration was required, a marriage record and/or death record listing
parents including mother's maiden name can proxy for a birth record.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
Repeat this process as you work
backwards through the generations. You may find it helpful to put the documents
for each generation in a file folder to keep them straight. Remember, the most
important part of this is to clearly link the line carrier in each generation
to his/her parents.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
As you move backwards, you will
find that civil registration for events stop being available. Look at the
FamilySearch Wiki (<a href="http://www.familysearch.org/wiki">www.familysearch.org/wiki</a>)
for detail on when civil registration was required in each state. Some counties
kept their own records prior to civil registration, but those are not complete.
For example, civil registration in Ohio began in December 1908, but it took
some counties several years to comply. Some counties had local records, but if
they do exist, they began after the Civil War. We do not expect you to find
records that were never created!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
As you move back before vital
records, you will need to find wills, probate records, land records, family bibles,
letters, etc to make the required links between generations. This is often when
secondary sources such as published genealogies and county histories come into
play. If you do have to dip into secondary sources, you need at least two and
one should not have been derived from the other.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
Personally, I love census
records. I try to find every one that I can for my own family. Census records
before 1850 are marginally useful as only the heads of households are listed,
and there is not enough information to be sure that you have identified the
correct person, particularly for men with common names. Census records from
1850 to 1870 are better because all names in the household are listed, but
there are no relationships specified. Marriages and parent/child relationships
are implied, but not proved. Several sequential enumerations with the same
family group do make that implication stronger. Census records beginning with
1880 do list relationships so they are more useful, but are still secondary
sources. The Historian General does not want to see every possible census
record – just the ones that provide helpful information that is not found in
other documents.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
Remember with all these
documents, that there can be errors. People lied, particularly about ages, and
people made up answers when they did not know what was correct. Any document
that is a copy of an original (such as census records) may include
transcription errors. If you find documents that show conflicting information,
include them all and we will just acknowledge that there are inconsistencies. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
I have had several applicants
lately tell me they were so freaked out by having to abbreviate their source
documents on the worksheet that they were essentially paralyzed. If that is
you, sit down, take a couple of deep breaths and let the fear go. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
The worksheet is a rough draft.
It is a framework for you to use to verify that you have all the documents you
need to prove your line. Abbreviate on the worksheet however works for you! It
is not the final application. It is only a tool that you can use as you need.
If you need more space, fine, if the pages don’t print as they should, fine. I
can deal with all of that when I prepare the finished application.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
We have given you some suggested
abbreviations to help you save space, but when I prepare your finished
application, I will re-work all the abbreviations to conform to Society
standards. I tend to work from the documents themselves, turning to your
worksheet mainly to make sure I have everything and to verify spellings. Even
then, on many applications, the verifier at the General society will often have
different ideas and change the abbreviations again!<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
You do NOT need to put a full
citation on the worksheet because you will be sending photocopies of the
documents with your worksheet. All I need is enough so that I know what
document you mean. If you want to give a full citation, print it on the back of
the document. We are all constantly urged to cite your sources and given great
guidance on how to do that, but this is not the place for full source citations
since you will be sending photocopies of each document.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Let me give you some examples:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]-->For a birth certificate, don’t put “Marion Co,
OH birth certificate number 12345” – just put B/C. The place and number are
readable on the document itself.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]-->For an old ledger style record, you can put the
location information on the back of the copy if it is not legible on the front.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]-->For digitized documents that you have
downloaded, you can write the name of the website and collection on the back.
DO NOT print a copy of the index page – I am just going to recycle the extra
paper.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]-->For a book, you don’t need to put in a full
citation such as “Commemorative Biographical Record Rock, Green, Grant, Iowa,
LaFayette Co WI, Chicago, JS Beers & Co, 1901” because you are going to
include a photocopy of that title page which has all that detail! A decent
abbreviation might be “Bio Rec Rock etc.” with the page number you are
referencing. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<!--[if !supportLists]--><span style="font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span><!--[endif]-->A reference that is not the original for the
event, such as using a detailed marriage certificate as a proxy for a
non-existent birth record should be put in parentheses, e.g. “(M/C)”.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 6.0pt;">
Let me also give you some
information on the somewhat cryptic things we put into abbreviations. If you
see a number in parentheses it is most likely the age of the person in that
document such as a census record or death record. If you see the word
“parents,” that means the full names of both parents are written on the
document. See the table below for more suggestions and explanations.<o:p></o:p></div>

<ul>
<li>If you are doing a location search, enter the place name in Country,State,County format. For example, search for United States, Ohio, Medina then click the search button. You should get a long list of every collection they have on Medina County.</li>
<li>If you are already logged in to your FamilySearch account, you can open the Catalog to search without leaving the main part of the website. To do this, click on Search, then Right-click on the Catalog link and then click on Open in a new Tab on the menu that will display. You can then go back and forth between the Catalog and the indexed records.</li>
<li>I have had a hard time finding the link to search for a nearby Family History Center. The best way I have found is at the bottom of the main page, click on the link for Site Map. When the lists display, the link to the Family History Centers is in the Get Help list.</li>
</ul>
Good luck with your searches! Remember, the Historian General wants to see images of the original record, not an index. Ann Gulbransen, Historianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08413357325835904107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-51783708981110331812017-10-24T19:03:00.002-04:002017-10-24T19:03:42.018-04:00No more microfilm rentals?? How can I get records now?You probably know by now that the Family History Library in Salt Lake City is no longer loaning rolls of microfilm. Microfilm is a technology that is rapidly becoming obsolete, and the raw film almost impossible to find. FamilySearch is committed to digitize all the records they have on microfilm over the next few years.<br />
<br />
So, what do we do now? FamilySearch has indicated that they have already digitized the most frequently requested rolls of microfilm. However, much of that content has not yet been indexed so it is not available on the main FamilySearch.org website. But, it is available online!<br />
<br />
The key is to search for the records you want in the catalog on the FamilySearch website. If you find an index record in a collection such as Ohio Marriages 1800-1958, you should see a microfilm number on the right side of the index record.<br />
<br />
From the menu at the top of the website, click on Search and pick Catalog from the list. On the Catalog page, you should see a link for Film/Fiche number. Enter the film number from the index record you found and you should be taken to a page with details of that record. If the record is one you can view from home, you will see a camera icon next to a link for the film. Click on the icon and you will be presented with a digital copy of the film that you can browse to find the record you want.<br />
<br />
If you see a camera icon with a key above it, that means you can only view the digitized imates at a Family History Center or affiliate library. Use the website to find the closest FHC to your location, go there and use their computer to repeat the steps above. You should now be able to browse the images and find the one you need.<br />
<br />
If you don't have a film number, you can use the other search parameters to see catalog entries for your desired location, surname, etc. You should see both physical holdings and microfilm collections.<br />
<br />
What else can you do? Think about participating in indexing records for FamilySearch. The more records get indexed by volunteers like you, the faster the record collections will be available on the main site. <br />
<br />
Good luck with your search for records!Ann Gulbransen, Historianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08413357325835904107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-44355562399327545212016-10-04T21:32:00.001-04:002016-10-04T21:38:26.521-04:00The Dating Game – Part 2<div class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Today, 4 October 2016 is the 434th
anniversary of the Gregorian Calendar.
In an earlier article, I explained the reason for the slash between the
last two digits of the year. In this
article, I want to get into a bit of the science and the law in getting the
Julian and Gregorian calendars in sync with each other.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> The
reason for the discrepancy deals with physics itself. The rotates once roughly 24 hrs. by our
reckoning with the sun, but measured at 23 hrs., 56 min., and 4 sec. by
reckoning with the stars.<a href="file:///C:/Users/Lee/Dropbox/OH%20Mayflower%20BOA/Assistant%20Historian_dating%20game_pt2.docx#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">[1]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a> As the Earth rotates, the planet revolves
around the sun 1 sidereal year (by the stars) every 365 days, 6 hrs., 9 min.,
and 9.76 sec.<a href="file:///C:/Users/Lee/Dropbox/OH%20Mayflower%20BOA/Assistant%20Historian_dating%20game_pt2.docx#_ftn2" name="_ftnref2" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">[2]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a>
To add further complications, orbital motion is not uniform. In essence, the earth’s rotation is slowing
down and days are getting longer with respect to its orbit.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> The
impetus for the conversion came from calculations for the date of Easter were
way off. When Julius Caesar created his
calendar, he did not take into account the variability of the orbit. He took into account of the days, but not the
hours, minutes, and seconds. He shortchanged
himself by 11 minutes/day. As a
consequence, the drift between the two calendar systems grew about 10 days at
least. By the time Christianity arrived,
the Easter date was tied to the Vernal equinox and before the reforms, the
celebrations took place in the heat of Summer, not Spring!<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal;">
<span style="font-family: "times new roman" , serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> To
compensate, a Jesuit priest Christoph Clavius wrote a tract, <i>Novi Calendarii Romani Apologia<a href="file:///C:/Users/Lee/Dropbox/OH%20Mayflower%20BOA/Assistant%20Historian_dating%20game_pt2.docx#_ftn3" name="_ftnref3" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">[3]</span></b></span><!--[endif]--></span></a></i>
in 1588 after the papal bull written by Gregory XIII went into effect,
explaining the need to change the way religious holy days were calculated
because the Julian year was too long.
Clavius received help from Aloysius Lilius, an astronomer to do the
needed computations and reforms. Clavius
wrote the tract to defend Gregory XIII’s papal bull, <i>Inter Gravissimas</i>, announcing the changes suggested by Clavius and
Lilius to bring religious and civil time reckoning into sync. The changes were made during the reign of
Elizabeth I of England. Some European
countries switched immediately; however, England made the switch in 1750. Parliament passed the Calendar Act of 1750 (24
Geo. 2 c. 23) to switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar,
while the American colonies adopted it in 1753.
Yesterday, Saudi Arabia switched to the Gregorian calendar to pay its civil
servants.<a href="file:///C:/Users/Lee/Dropbox/OH%20Mayflower%20BOA/Assistant%20Historian_dating%20game_pt2.docx#_ftn4" name="_ftnref4" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><!--[if !supportFootnotes]--><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 107%;">[4]</span></span><!--[endif]--></span></a> <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Many of you are lucky enough to have family bibles that were kept by your
grandparents and previous generations. There is a section in most bibles where
births, marriages and deaths can be recorded. For some if these events, the
family bible may be the only place they are recorded.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">When are these family records considered primary documentation for your
Mayflower Society (or other lineage society) application? There are a lot of
factors to consider.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">First, you need to know who owns the bible today, who owned it originally
and how it traveled into the hands of the current owner. The provenance of how
it was handed down in the family can add or detract from the credibility of the
data.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Next, you need to know how old the physical book is. The best way is to make
a copy of the title page that has the date when the book was published. You
need to know this so you can judge if the events that were recorded happened
after the book was published or years earlier. A bible published in 1850 that
records events starting in 1860 is worth a whole lot more genealogically than a
bible published in 1950 that records events starting in 1700! Events recorded
long after the fact are hearsay and are considered circumstantial evidence at
best.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Now, look at the handwriting. Does it look like all the entries were written
by the same person at the same time (same hand, same ink)? If so, then this is
again hearsay. If the handwriting and ink looks different on the entries, it is
much more likely that they were written at the time the events occurred and are
genealogically much more credible.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">The next thing to look at is the completeness of the data. It is rare that
you will find places listed in bible entries, but sometimes you will get lucky.
The important thing is to see if relationships are specified. A long list of
names and dates with no indication of how the people were related does nothing
to help you link the line carriers in your lineage. The best bible records specify
relationships. Remember, a document has to say what you are trying to prove!</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">What about bible transcripts? Often, the original bible cannot be located,
but you have a transcript, either handwritten or published. The first thing you
need to do is find out who made the transcript and when it was made. That will
give it some credibility. You won’t have the clues from the handwriting, but a
good transcript will show the date the bible was published and all the details
including any recorded relationships. A transcript is never as good as an
original, but it is sometimes all we have.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-size: small;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="font-family: "Hypatia Sans Pro","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;">So, having a family bible
is a wonderful treasure for your family, but its worth as a genealogical record
depends on lots of factors. For Mayflower, if the bible does not meet the above
criteria, it will be considered as an unpublished family record and

Some counties started recording deaths in the probate court after the Civil War, although few began earlier. If no records are found on the microfilm, try going to the probate court in person and ask if the early records can be photographed. I know in the Huron, Richland, and Ashland Counties allow a person digitally photograph the old records (color is better in my opinion - makes it more real). Sometimes going through the <a href="https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1992421">Ohio probate records</a>. The images are unindexed, but well worth the search. That is how I managed to connect an ancestress to her parents through her father's Will in the Ashtabula probate records.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10181142209455539152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-40443159644895850832016-01-07T18:38:00.003-05:002016-01-07T18:38:43.706-05:00Ohio Birth & Death RecordsDid you know that a line item in HB 64, recently signed by Governor John Kasich reads: "A local registrar shall allow an individual to phtograph or otherwise copy a birth or death record."<br />
<br />
This means that in any Ohio county registrar's office, you can use a camera or your smart phone to photograph, or a portable scanner such as the ScanSnap or a wand scanner (at the discretion of the local registrar) to copy any birth or death record on file as a non-certified copy. You should be able to do this free of charge, though the local registrar will always be happy to accept a donation for the time needed to pull the record for you. Cash is always welcome, though cookies can work too!<br />
<br />
Ohio birth records after 1908 are available at any county registrar's office (often the local health department). Death records after 1908 are only available in the county where the death occurred, though don't forget the great collection of Ohio death certificates from Dcember 1908 through 1953 online at FamilySearch.org.<br />
<br />
Ohio Mayflower DOES NOT require certified copies of birth, death or marriage records. Any record that you can photograph or copy based on this new law is just fine. The key is it has to be in focus so every word is legible! We need all names (including the names of parents) and all dates and places to be clearly readable. You might want to practice your technique before you go...Ann Gulbransen, Historianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08413357325835904107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-17863999130891092282015-11-22T19:27:00.002-05:002015-11-22T19:27:59.385-05:00How to help your historianAlmost all the partner society historians are volunteers, Only the largest societies have paid staff. Most of us spend a lot of time fixing things our applicants have either not done or done incorrectly. Here are a couple of tips to help your historian process your application quickly.<br />
<br />
1. Read and follow the instructions! This sounds simple, but I am always amazed at applicants who don't follow explicit instructions. If the instructions say send two copies of each document, send two copies. If the instructions tell you how to organize your documents (as Ohio's does) then follow those directions. Ohio's instructions say no binders, no folders, no sheet protectors. I can't tell you how much time I have spent undoing work that applicants have done incorrectly! It is a waste of your time and a waste of mine.<br />
<br />
2. Make sure you have linked the generations clearly. Any application will fail if you don't.<br />
<br />
3. Answer your emails/letters! If you move or change your email, let your historian know ASAP!<br />
<br />
4. Keep in touch so your historian knows about your progress. We technically have a time limit on a preliminary approval but most of us will happily grant extensions (who wants to do work over). If you keep in touch, we will keep granting extensions. If you don't, your application may get canceled.Ann Gulbransen, Historianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08413357325835904107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-7865135735354755552015-11-22T19:11:00.001-05:002015-11-22T19:11:11.781-05:00Ancestor vs DescendantGrammar police here - your parents, your grandparents and all the generations before them are your ANCESTORS. Your children, your grandchildren and all future generations are your DESCENDANTS. Every time I read "I have found a new Mayflower Descendant" I cringe. You have found another Mayflower ANCESTOR! You are the descendant. Sorry, rant over...Ann Gulbransen, Historianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08413357325835904107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-12636778777803367552015-08-11T14:06:00.002-04:002015-08-11T14:06:43.548-04:00CemeteriesJust as birth certificates, birth records, marriage records, and death records provide (usually) a tangible link to our ancestors, cemeteries provide information useful in our search of a different sort. In cases where no death exists or one could be found, the date on a tombstone may be the only record of death for an individual. The photo below is one of my ancestors. No death record exists at the probate courthouse and this is the only record of his death. The information on the stone is considered as primary evidence in the absence of a written record.<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-15sJJ9VNsZI/VcoxgIMn4wI/AAAAAAAAASE/wNgc9vEBqVY/s1600/DSC_6169.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-15sJJ9VNsZI/VcoxgIMn4wI/AAAAAAAAASE/wNgc9vEBqVY/s320/DSC_6169.JPG" width="212" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ezekiel Case - Evergreen Cemetery, Pierpont, Ohio</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Information on a tombstone varies considerably. If a person is lucky enough to gaze upon a tombstone and find the exact age at the time of death, the birth date can be calculated. In some older sections of a cemetery<div>
<br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Z-mexAds-8/Vco37TCxCTI/AAAAAAAAASU/XXtYQEQpC3A/s1600/DSCN4573.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4Z-mexAds-8/Vco37TCxCTI/AAAAAAAAASU/XXtYQEQpC3A/s320/DSCN4573.JPG" width="240" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Elisha Hedge - Ancient Cemetery, Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
the "phrase in the __ year of [his/her] age" means the person entered into their next birth year when the person died. In the above example, Elisha died at 15 years of age, beginning his "16th year."</blockquote>

The Society of Mayflower Descendants, like all other lineage societies wants birth certificates as far back as we can get them, with earlier birth records when they were kept at the local level.<br />
<br />
The good news in Ohio is that you can walk into any Health Department office in the state and obtain a birth certificate for any one born in Ohio since December 1908.<br />
<br />
The bad news is that by Ohio law, if you request that birth certificate in a county other than where the person was born, the staff are prohibited from listing the birth location as anything other than "Ohio" on the certificate. We actually want to see the city and county of birth in addition to the state, so this law makes the certificates less than ideal.<br />
<br />
What to do? Send to the county where the person was born and request the certificate there, or send to the State Health Department. You can download the application at <a href="http://www.odh.ohio.gov/pdf/forms/hea2709.pdf">http://www.odh.ohio.gov/pdf/forms/hea2709.pdf</a>. You can also include a hospital birth certificate or other document to prove the complete location of the birth.Ann Gulbransen, Historianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08413357325835904107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-51850479324203024872015-07-19T13:25:00.000-04:002015-07-19T13:25:09.057-04:00The Dating Game<div class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Well, y’all – time to play the
dating game! Before everyone thinks the
poor old, dilapidated assistant historian lost his mental faculties, the dating
game is not what one would think. The
dating game does not involve relative dating in neither a geological sense (and
yes, I did say geological) nor a genealogical sense (with a subtle difference
between the two). I’m talking about
double dating. One could argue I may be
referring to double dates as a genealogical phenomenon when two sisters date
two brothers of a different family and may be related – ah, noooo, I’m not; at
least, not in this case.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> The
double dating I’m referring deals with calendrical systems. For example 21 February 1721/22 is a double
date. Now why is there a slash between
21 and 22? It has to be one or the
other, but not both. Well, yes and
no. Yes, in the sense it must be in a
definitive temporal year, either 1721 or 1722; however, no because the two
calendrical systems I refer to are the Julian calendar and the Gregorian
calendar. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> The
Julian calendar started by Julius Caesar in 46 BC (</span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_calendar"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julian_calendar</span></a><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">: accessed 19 July
2015) divided the year into 12 months with fixed 365 days with one day added
every four years. As time passed errors
creeped in because of irregularity in earth orbit and lunar orbit throwing off
religious festivals. For example, Easter
in the Christian Tradition occurred in the March timeframe. As centuries passed the Easter date fell in
the middle of May – far from March. To
compensate, Pope Gregory XIII introduced reforms.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> The
Gregorian calendar is similar to the Julian except century years, 1800, 1900
(centuries divided by 100) are not leap years unless divisible by 400 (2000 is
a leap year). With the reforms, the calendars
were brought into sync (</span><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar"><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregorian_calendar</span></a><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">: accessed 19 July
2015). The reforms instituted by Pope
Gregory took effect 15 October 1582; however, Great Britain didn’t adopt it
until 1750. The American colonies didn’t
adopt it until 1753.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;"> The example date I gave, 21 February
1721/22 means 21 February 1721 in the Julian calendar (Old Style) but 21
February 1722 in the Gregorian (New Style).
The double dates exist only between January-24 Mar (25 March is the New
Year in the Julian calendar). To add a
further wrinkle, the Julian system is about 10 days behind the Gregorian
meaning in the Old Style 21 February would be 11 February 1721, but 21 February
1722 in the Gregorian. The trick is
trying to keep the two systems separated.
For me, the best way to remember if there is a date with no slash for
Jan-March, deduct 1 year and put a slash between the two years.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10181142209455539152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-26664619821594064842014-12-15T22:18:00.000-05:002014-12-15T22:18:01.991-05:00The Name Game<div class="MsoNormalCxSpFirst">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;">Ah, yes – the name game. Growing up, I heard many names mentioned
about people and never really thought of how they relate to me, if at all,
until in my later years in the service.
How many times do we remember a name and try to piece together the
relationship? Many times names are
recycled through the generations. With
the advent of the internet, a plethora of names cascades off the webpages such
as <i>Ancestry.com</i>, <i>Fold3</i>, <i>FamilySearch</i>, and
others. Our job as genealogists is to
sift through the names and generations to see where the people fit in our
ancestral or correlative puzzle.
Unfortunately, the above named websites, particularly <i>Ancestry.com</i> and <i>FamilySearch</i>, contain much bogus information in the form of mis-keyed entries.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> As
a “baby” genealogist I ordered Family Tree Maker 2005 software and I searched
for my ancestor, William Barker and came up with several hundred thousand
hits. By the time I finished merging
trees, the poor man had15 wives and several hundred kids. I knew he was born in the 1840s and had one
wife. In extreme frustration, I deleted
my great-great grandfather from existence (and yet, I’m still here) and started
over. The story illustrates important
points – start with yourself and work back, don’t rely on the internet for all
information, and use a variety of records from the courts, libraries,
historical societies plus other reputable sources.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> In
order to prove each event in our ancestors lives, each record must be cited and
verified by cross-referencing with other records. What do I mean? For example, my ancestor William Barker
entered into this world 6 January 1842, Millwood Township, Guernsey County,
Ohio. The event is precise, but no birth
records were kept in Ohio until the late 1860s.
How can it be cross-referenced?
Using a death certificate from the Ohio Department of Health or perhaps
a probate record from the court. I
obtained the death certificate that gives his birth date, trouble is the birth
is secondary. I checked the probate
court and there is no probate records for William.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt;"> Another
way to cross-reference is to use the 1880 census. The 1880 census gives relationships and an
approximate year of birth. Actually, the
more censuses used the better, even if no relationships are stated. Land records can be used as well because of
the transference of property, in addition to a marriage being written into the
record. Tombstone photos in cemeteries
will help.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormalCxSpMiddle">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman",serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin;"> With amassed records, cite all your
sources so that if a person has a question, the sources can be consulted. Citations show that a person is serious about
documenting ancestors using reliable, verifiable data and will show credibility
of the researcher. Another caveat awaits
the researcher – just because a person may have the same surname as yourself or
the family you work, does not necessarily mean you are related. I have seen many lineage reviews with Whites
and Warrens, along with others. When I
check the first five generations to see if the line is good, I found the
opposite to be true because there is no such child belonging to the couple or,
perhaps, there is a child, but, the line does not continue. Check your sources and verify before
proceeding to the next generation.</span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10181142209455539152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-44283015408053712162014-02-26T10:58:00.001-05:002014-02-26T13:38:56.953-05:00Massachusetts Vital Records, part 2 Massachusetts vital records exist at the town level and, for the most part, been microfilmed by the Mormon Church. Images taken from the microfilm have been put on Ancestry.com under the "Massachusetts, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988" database; but, Ancestry.com does not give the full citation of what microfilm is used. Depending who indexed the image, a volume number may or may not appear and for the same person, there may be multiple references for the same piece of data. For example, my 7th Great Grandfather, the Honorable Judah Thacher, has three references in the Yarmouth Town Records for his birth 20 August 1693 in Yarmouth (Yarmouth, Massachusetts, Town Records, Births, 1657-1783, 3: 55, Judah Thacher; FHL microfilm 945511; Yarmouth, Massachusetts, Vital Records, Births, 1678-1823, 7: 11, Judah Thacher; FHL microfilm 945511; Yarmouth, Massachusetts, Town Records, 1678-1860, 18: 12, Judah Thacher; FHL microfilm 945513) lists the same person, birth date and parents three different times.<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
With the Judah Thacher example, each town clerk at that particular time hand-wrote each entry. Volumes 3,4 and 7 are on microfilm 945511 while volume 18 dealing with individuals grouped in family units is on microfilm 945513. For Judah, he is listed with his siblings under John Thacher and Lydia Gorham (my ancestress). Both of these films are on permanent loan at the OGS library in Bellville, Ohio. These microfilms are the actual basis of the transcriptions of the records done by the late Robert and Ruth Sherman in two volumes (<i>Vital Records of Yarmouth, Massachusetts to the Year 1850</i>) also found at the OGS library. The important point to remember is the microfilm records are the original registers and are primary source evidence in proving relationships in colonial Massachusetts versus the Sherman transcripts which are secondary.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What do I mean by primary and secondary source evidence? Primary sources deal with recording the event either by an eyewitness to the event or transmitted to someone else to record by the eyewitness. For example, the birth of a child. The mother birthed the child and she went to the town clerk along with her husband to register the birth. When the town clerk entered the information in the register, that would be the "birth certificate" for that child. The town clerk may or may not hire other clerks to collect the registers and re-copy them into other volumes particularly in cases after a fire or other natural disasters to insure preservation of the record not only for public viewing but also for the government in determining local taxes.</div>

Part 2When collecting evidence try to get primary sources if possible. For example, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage records from the probate court with the return at the very bottom which should give the actual marriage date. Prior to 1908 in Ohio birth, death and marriage records were kept at the probate court. Depending on the county, ask to see if they will let you take digital photographs of those records. If allowed, take photographs and include it. If getting to the courthouse is impractical, try going to the local county chapter of OGS and see if you can examine the records on microfilm. If there is no microfilm, order it from Salt Lake and have it sent to the local LDS church to view it or send it to the OGS library in Belleville. If the ancestor in question is not listed in the birth records, use the social security number to obtain a copy of the social security application (<a href="https://secure.ssa.gov/apps9/eFOIA-FEWeb/internet/main.jsp">https://secure.ssa.gov/apps9/eFOIA-FEWeb/internet/main.jsp</a>). Other records that can be used are probate records if any exist for the individual.<br />
<br />
Once you traced your ancestor to Massachusetts, try to look for vital records by the Town Clerk. For example, when I found out that my fourth great grandfather came from Yarmouth, Massachusetts, I ordered Town Records by the Town Clerk on microfilm from Salt Lake. With that I was able to get original birth records and not rely on transcriptions (a two volume set of transcriptions of Yarmouth vital records were done by the Shermans in the 1970s or 1980s). Many cases I found the same records in different volumes and helps as a cross-check. I took the images of the Yarmouth records and created Word document with it to include full source citations and sent them to Ann to include in my file; basically for the source citation, I simply copy-pasted the citation from my RootsMagic software onto the word document. I used the Town records to supplement the Silver books and the Howland volumes. By submitting the Word document with the images and source citations to Ann, she could view the record and verify that what is on the application is indeed is the same as what's on the record. The Sherman transcriptions are accurate; but transcriptions are prone to error (any record is prone to error in reality).<br />
<br />
Point being use as many verifiable records as possible to back up your claim - the more, usually the better.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10181142209455539152noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7218061224318878239.post-19682679831013494172013-06-15T18:46:00.000-04:002013-06-15T18:46:28.205-04:00How many documents should you send?<div class="MsoPlainText">
I received a question from an applicant today who wanted to know if she should send obituaries, headstone photos, cemetery records, etc for an ancestor for whom she has a long form death certificate that includes parents' names, spouse name, and all the other information we look for. </div>
<br />
<div class="MsoPlainText">
The answer is "it
depends!" For a person for whom you have not only the long form death
certificate but also have a birth certificate and perhaps even a marriage
document that includes parents, then the death certificate is sufficient. </div>
<div class="MsoPlainText">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoPlainText">
For a
person for whom the death certificate is also your main source for birth
information, I would include everything you<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>have. In these situations, I also try to find census records that show
the person in the household of his/her parents. The 1900 census should always be included if applicable as it gives month and year of birth and can corroborate the birth information on the death certificate. If you are not sure, then send
it all. I may not use it all, but let me make the determination.</div>

<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=7218061224318878239" name="_GoBack"></a>What is wrong with an index?</h2>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
There are several kinds of indices that you can find online when you
are doing genealogical research. Let me explain the issues that we see.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The first problem with almost any index is transcription errors. An
index is a secondary source, transcribed from a primary source. Transcription
errors are easy to make, but when you cannot see the original to verify, it is
impossible to tell if the index is correct.Old handwriting can be difficult so it is always better to have the original to study.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The second problem is that an index almost never includes all the
information on the original document. If you have participated in any indexing
of records through Ancestry.com or Family Search.org, you know that you key in
only selected fields. Those selected fields may not include the information we
need to successfully prove a lineage.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Here are some examples:</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";"> <u>
</u></span></span></span><u>Index of recent documents such as the California
Death Inde</u>x: Generally, if you find an event listed in one of these indices of
recent occurrences, you can be certain that an actual certificate for the event
exists and can be ordered. These indices are generally databases of the original
documents that are on file. We depend on the actual long form certificates for
more than just the date and place of the event. Since the most important part
of a lineage application is making the link between generations, we depend on
having the information on the names of the person’s parents and often the name
of the spouse. The original document should always be requested when an event
is found in an index like this.</div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";">
</span></span></span><u>Index of historical records such as the Ohio
Marriages database on FamilySearch.org</u>: Mose indices of this type are
transcriptions of very old records, often from microfilm. The original images
will someday be digitized, but they are not yet. As indicated above, only
selected fields from the original record have been indexed which may or may not
include what you need. For the collections on FamilySearch, the original
microfilm number is usually at the bottom of the page. You can use the website
to request a copy of the microfilm at your local Family History Center where
you can view and print a copy of the original record. </div>
<div class="MsoListParagraphCxSpLast" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-add-space: auto; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; text-indent: -.25in;">
<span style="font-family: Symbol; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font: 7.0pt "Times New Roman";"> <u>
</u></span></span></span><u>Social Security Death Index (SSDI)</u>: Not everyone
will be included in the SSDI - the deceased person must have collected benefits
to be included and not every death gets reported. The only data element that can be reliably collected here is
the date of death. The location is where the last check was mailed, not where
the person died. For more detailed information, you can send in a request for
the original Social Security application, the SS5. That document will include
date and place of birth and the names of the person’s parents, all key
information for proving a lineage.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Indices can be very useful records, but they should mainly be used as
clues to help you find the original records that you need to prove your
lineage. There are times that the original records no longer exist and the
index is all we have. In such cases, make sure you include the title page of
the index book or collection and a copy of the introductory text that explains
the circumstances of the transcriptions and the fate of the original records.</div>

Ancestry.com has now published a large collecction of images of the original records, and the collection is growing constantly as new towns are added. The Historian General has requested that you include photocopies of the original records for generations not included in the MF Silver Books or MFIP books. If you print the records from Ancestry, please make sure you get a clear copy (e.g. on a laser printer) and also include a zoomed in copy of the target record. If you don't have access to Ancestry, please let us know and we can print the copies for you. <span style="color: #1f497d;">The family of John
Holmes, son of Desire (Doty) Sherman and Israel Holmes, as developed in MF
11:2: 24, is now to be seen to be corrected by the article in NEHGR 166: 85-97.
The six children found in MF 11:2, ascribed to John Holmes and Sarah
Thomas, are not to be seen to be the grandchildren of Desire Doty. The
four children named in this newly published article: Desire, Israel, Deborah
and John are now to be considered the correct children of John Holmes and his
wife Sarah Church, and therefore the true grandchildren of Desire (Doty) Holmes
Standish. The birth date for John, son of Desire and Israel, is correct as
found in MF 11:2; who he married, and who were their children, is where the
Doty book went astray. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: #1f497d;">Thanks to Jay Lucas, Massachusetts Society historian, it
is also to be noted that John Holmes’ wife, Sarah Church, is a Richard Warren
descendant, as can be found in MF 18:1:130. So these newly identified grandchildren
of Desire (Doty) (Sherman) Holmes are also Warren descendants. Sarah
Church was the daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah Barstow Church; Nathaniel Church
the son of Elizabeth², Richard¹ Warren.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: #1f497d;">So the family group of John Holmes and Sarah Church, as
found in NEHGR 166:91-98 are Warren descendants as well as Doty; and the Warren
18:1:130 is also now seen to be incorrect as to the parentage of Sarah Church’s
husband John Holmes, as the “probable son of Joseph and Sarah (Sprague)
Holmes.” The listing of Sarah Church and John Holmes’ children
found in MF 18:1:130 is incomplete. So you will want to annotate both books, MF
11:2:24 and MF 18:1:130 with the corrected information following four
children of John and Sarah Church Holmes. Hopefully we will see
something more specifically on those four children eventually (more on that
below).</span></div>

If you are printing census records from Ancestry.com, the first print should be the full image plus the reference data. Check the box to put the reference on a separate page to keep the census image large. Don’t click Print on the initial dialog box that Ancestry gives you. Click Cancel, then click File => Print Preview. Play with the size setting until the image is as large as you can get it without overflowing the page. You can also change the orientation of the page from portrait to landscape for the best fit.</span></div>

I have found that Ancestry’s print current view routine does not give me what I want. I use a piece of free software called PrintKey. You should be able to find it online. One of the features I really like is the ability to identify a rectangular area of the screen to save or print rather than the entire screen. You also have both print and save options - or a copy option if you want to put a screenshot into another document.</span></div>
